This article traces the entire arc from the perspective of someone who built it: 33 years inside the Indian Telecommunication Service, culminating in overseeing pan-India operations as Full-time Director on the Board of BSNL.

The article covers five phases: the electromechanical era of the 1970s and its workforce lessons; the C-DOT digital revolution of the 1980s; liberalisation and the entry of private operators in the 1990s; the mobile revolution and BSNL's corporatisation in the 2000s; and the broadband and Digital India era of the present, where India crossed one billion broadband subscribers in 2025.

Each phase is examined for the lessons it holds for enterprise leaders navigating technology-driven transformation in any sector — with specific insights on workforce retraining, convergence, data governance, regulatory fluency, and last-mile delivery.
